Volunteers
Jen & Sylvie
Sylvie and Jen are married to each other and are raising two young children and a very assertive kitten, right here in Newton, Surrey. Sylvie's the tall one in the picture.
Sylvie says she is always stumped when asked to describe herself because categories don't work for her. She has training in Crisis Intervention work, a background in Psychology and lots of experience with horses and other creatures! As VP of SYA she's in charge of curriculum development (she plans all the speakers and workshops and organizes all of our outreach activities) and she also volunteers at Group. Her ears and heart are always open for youth with their various challenges, issues and achievements.
Jen has been described as a quirky and witty university prof with a history of youth work dating back to the early 1990s. She's been out since, forever! Even participating in Scotland's first Gay Pride march. Her claim to fame is she worked on gay campaigning with Sir Ian McKellan (Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy). She's been the Literary Editor of the magazine Gay Scotland but that was a long time ago, though her activism didn't stop there. Now she volunteers for SYA and assists Sylvie in curriculum planning.
